Controversies Surrounding Kuami Eugene VGMA Win

Kuami Eugene a 23-year-old Ghanaian high-life and afrobeat singer-songwriter signed to Lynx Entertainment is known for several amazing songs including “Angela”, “Wish Me Well”, “Ohemaa”, and many others. He won the New Artist awards in 2018 from the Ghana Music Awards and the Ghana Music Awards UK. He also received the Most Promising Artist in Africa award from (AFRIMA.  In 2019, he received 7 nominations at the Ghana Music Awards and went on to win the awards for Album of the Year, Producer of the Year and Highlife Artiste of the Year.

He was also crowned Artist of the Year and Highlife Artist of the Year at the 2020 Ghana Music Awards. He was recently awarded the Vodafone Ghana Music Awards (VGMA) Artiste of the year making him the youngest musician alive in the history of Ghana music, to win the coveted VGMA.

Following this achievement, a lot of controversies have sprung up and are largely centred on the notion that Eugene is undeserving of the award.

Guru, the Lapaz Toyota hitmaker has said publicly that Kuami Eugene does not deserve that award. In his opinion, Sarkodie and Kofi Kinaata are suitable persons to have won. Guru opined that gospel musician Diana Hamilton is an even a better option.

Maame Serwaa, a  young Kumawood actress is also not happy with Kuami Eugene’s win. Following her tweet after the awards ceremony that Ghanaians should no longer take the VGMA seriously. Maame Serwaa stated her expectation for Sarkodie to win, indicating that Kuami Eugene did not deserve the award at all.

Members of the public have also said Kuami Eugene did not deserve to win the Artiste of the Year. One such person is Dan Lartey who betted with his hair over Sarkodie. Lartey promised that he was going to shave off his hair and long beard if Sarkodie should lose the award, and he did just so. He maintained in a programme on TV3 that he was very sure Sarkodie was going to win because Kuami Eugene did not deserve it.

Some people have also described Kuami Eugene an arrogant person stating that his win was going to worsen matters. Others claimed Kuami Eugene had not worked hard enough to deserve that award. However, the young musician has opposed that claim saying that he released two major songs – Obiato, and Ohemaa, under the year’s review. He described those songs as “songs that were all over Africa.”

Kuami Eugene is unhappy that his competitors in that category, Sarkodie and Diana Hamilton, had not congratulated him as at Tuesday, September 1. He said the only one who has congratulated him so far was Kofi Kinaata, who was also a competitor. Others are Medikal, and Keche, who eventually congratulated the Rockstar.

Kuami Eugene has also replied to Guru’s opinion that he did not deserve the award. The source also reported that the musician underscored the fact that people are opinionated and he is not bothered by anyone’s opinion of his win.
