The decision by Nigeria’s central Niger state to rename its recently renovated airport after President Bola Tinubu has ignited controversy and drawn criticism from various quarters.
Hajia Binta Mammam, the state’s spokesperson, defended the move, stating that the renaming of Minna International Airport was a gesture of appreciation for President Tinubu’s contributions to the development of the state.
However, many Nigerians have voiced scepticism regarding the decision, questioning its economic relevance and the rationale behind naming the airport after a political figure.
President Tinubu is scheduled to visit Minna, the state’s capital, on Monday to inaugurate the revamped airport and launch an agricultural processing zone.
The airport was previously known as Abubakar Imam International Airport, named after a renowned Nigerian writer and journalist who played a significant role in establishing the first Hausa-language newspaper in northern Nigeria.
Last year, Nigerian aviation authorities announced plans to rename 15 federal airports after prominent figures, including former presidents, as part of efforts to honour their legacies.
