Nigerian actor and media personality Damilola Ogunsi has spoken out against the unchecked influence of bloggers on society, emphasising the need for regulation to curb misinformation and sensationalism.
He highlighted how social media lingo has infiltrated daily conversations and noted that many individuals now base their perspectives on the distorted narratives propagated by online platforms.
“We have turned the society into something else because we have lots of crazy bloggers,” Ogunsi remarked, expressing concern over the flood of misleading content shaping public perception.
“There are times when you have conversations with people, and you can basically hear Instagram lingo.” He added.
Addressing the broader implications of unregulated digital spaces, Ogunsi questioned whether authorities want to silence free speech or implement necessary oversight. Drawing comparisons with global regulatory approaches, he said, “Do they want to muffle the voice of the people? Because it shouldn’t be stifled,” he argued.
“Look at what they’ve done in Turkey—it’s really draconian. China’s to the extreme. But if you now begin to look at what’s happening in Dubai, you see that they are really doing it for the benefit of society.” Pointing to Dubai as a model, Ogunsi noted that effective content regulation can yield positive results
He stressed the lack of accountability in the digital space and believes that regulatory frameworks should be established to manage blogging activities responsibly.
