In a shocking turn of events, Uruguay forward Darwin Nunez was involved in a skirmish with Colombia fans after his team lost to Colombia in the Copa America soccer tournament on Wednesday night.
Colombia defeated Uruguay after Jefferson Lerma scored a lone goal in the semi-final’s first half.
When the final whistle was blown by Mexican referee Cesar Ramos, Nunez and his teammate Ronald Araujo hurried towards a section occupied by Colombia fans within the Bank of America Stadium.
Nunez was seen exchanging blows with Colombia supporters, the urgency of the situation evident, before law enforcement stepped in to douse the already burning flame.
Meanwhile, Uruguay’s captain, Jose Gimenez, said that his teammates were involved in the altercation because their families, seated close to Colombia supporters, were at risk.
“Please, I ask Uruguay’s careful. Families are in the stands. Our families are in danger. This is a disaster,” Gimenez told Directv.
