The Cameroonian Football Federation (FECAFOOT) have announced the cancellation of the 2019/2020 league season therefore crowning PWD Bamenda as the Elite 1 league title winners.
Like most countries around the world, Cameroon had earlier suspended all football activities for months after 28 games had been played due to the coronavirus pandemic.
The number of confirmed cases in the country is close to the 3,000 mark at the moment, leading to an agreement between Cameroon’s Transitional Technical Committee, FECAFOOT and the Cameroon women’s football league to cancel all football activities in the country until the new 2020/2021 season.
PWD Bamenda are champions for the first time in their history, they made a return to the Elite 1 league after spending 14 years in the lower division.
Astres of Douala and Louves Minprof have been crowned winners of the Elite 2 and women’s league respectively.
The Abakwa Boys will officially represent Cameroon in the CAF Champions League next season and Coton Sports who are second on the log will play in the CAF Confederation Cup.
The last time a Cameroonian club side won the Champions League was in 1979 when Union Douala defeated Ghana’s Accra Heart of Oak in the final.
The statement from FECAFOOT stated that Astres and Yafoot FC will be promoted to Elite 1 while Dragon will remain in the lower division next season.
Maletos and New Star who currently sit bottom of the Cameroonian second division, will avoid relegation.
The youth leagues are canceled and all the clubs will remain in the same league next season.
Cameroon join the likes of Mauritius, Guinea, Kenya, Ethiopia, and Burkina Faso who have canceled their 2019/2020 football season.
Ghana, Morocco, South Africa and Nigeria are still deciding the way to go with their various leagues despite the ultimatum by the Confederation of African Football on clubs who will represent their countries in continental competitions next year.
CAF is expected to make an announcement on the fate of the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations to be hosted by Cameroon as other competitions across the world are being postponed.
