The body of a South African woman Lusanda Sixaxeni who died in China has been repatriated back to her home in Mossel Bay.

Twenty-seven-year-old Sixaxeni worked as an English tutor for the last three years in China, before her death last month.

Authorities in China were going to cremate Sixaxeni’s remains, which contravenes the family’s beliefs. They were told that they would need to raise about R400,000 to bring Sixaxeni’s body back to South Africa.

The family managed to raise the money with assistance from residents of Mossel Bay and other South Africans, after which Sixaxeni’s body was brought home.

Her remains arrived in the country on Monday and were transported to her family home in KwaNonqaba on Tuesday.

The cause of her death has not been established. The former pupil from Point High School will be laid to rest on Saturday.
