Cosatu Stages March Against South Africa’s Economic Hardship

The Congress of South African Trade (COSATU) led a nationwide strike on Monday against unemployment, retrenchments, the rising cost of living, economic growth, and workers’ rights, painting the streets red and yellow.

The “Global Day for Decent Work” is expected to continue throughout the day. It will feature marches and picketing across the country, hoping to bring attention to the economic crisis marked by income inequality and poverty.

The union lamented that the high rate of unemployment, the cost of living, elevated Eskom tariffs, and corruption are driving many South Africans into poverty.

In recent years, South Africans have encountered numerous challenges, such as stunted economic growth, widespread unemployment, gender discrimination in workplaces, and limited access to essential services. The government has pledged to address these issues.
