Reports indicate that the prices of cooking gas in Kenya has surged, raising the cost of living for many kenyan citizens in the country.
Rubis Energy alerted its customers on Sunday, March 6, of the impending higher rates that would take effect on Monday, March 7, with the new price of the 13kg cylinder gas rising from Sh3,113 to Sh3,440.
The 6kg cylinder will cost Sh1560, up from Sh1441, and the 35 kg cylinder will cost Sh8, 760, up from Sh8, 191.
Cooking gas Prices have risen by 50% since January last year, by Sh1000, more than three times the government’s 16 percent VAT on LPG.
Russia, which invaded Ukraine on February 24, 2022, is the world’s largest natural gas producer. For months, Russia has been accused of deliberately interrupting gas supplies in order to leverage its position as a key energy provider to Europe during a developing dispute with Ukraine.
Increases in fuel costs are anticipated to rise in Kenya’s already high cost of living. Inflation in the country jumped to 5.78 percent last month, up from 5.69 percent in January.
