As Friday comes to an end, the closure of campaigns for the upcoming presidential and regional elections in Comoros is imminent, with some presidential candidates urging a boycott.

Incumbent President Azali Assoumani is contending with five challengers as he seeks a fourth term in office.

Concerns about the credibility of the polls and the detention of political prisoners have prompted threats of a boycott from several candidates in the months leading up to the election.

President Assoumani, a former military officer who initially came to power through a coup in 1999, and the electoral body CENI have assured the nation of a transparent electoral process.

With over 300,000 registered voters in the small African archipelago, whose population is estimated at 836,000 by the World Bank, all eyes are on the upcoming elections set to take place on Sunday.
