Court Clears 13 For Burkina Faso’s Presidential Election

Burkina Faso’s constitutional court has cleared 13 candidates for the presidential elections fixed for 22 November.

The candidates include the incumbent President, Roch Kaboré, who is seeking a second term; opposition leader Zephirin Diabre of Union for Progress and Change (UPC); and the former ruling Congress for Democracy and Progress (CDP) party’s candidate, Eddie Komboigo.

The constitutional court did not clear one candidate, Kindo Harouna, because he did not pay the required nomination fee.

Eight presidential candidates and 22 opposition parties signed an agreement in August to rally behind any candidate who will reach the second round of the elections to boost chances of unseating President Kaboré.

Elsewhere in Africa, Guinea awaits the results of a presidential poll held last Sunday. Preliminary reports showed President Alpha Conde, who is seeking a third term, in the lead.
