COVID-19 Death Toll in Zimbabwe Hits 291 With 10 New Fatalities

Zimbabwe’s Ministry of Health and Child Care has announced 10 new coronavirus (COVID-19) related deaths.

Of the deaths, nine were reported by Harare Province retrospectively while one new death was reported by Bulawayo, southwest Zimbabwe.

The new fatalities bring the death toll in the Southern African nation to 291.

Zimbabwe recorded its first coronavirus case in March 2020. However, after a recent decrease in daily new infections, the country is witnessing a surge in new Covid-19 cases.

Last week alone, Zimbabwe recorded 667 new cases. On Saturday, the announced 70 new cases while on Friday it reported 123 infections.

Saturday’s 70 cases comes from 1,577 PCR tests, indicating a positivity rate of 4.4 percent.

Of the new cases, 50 were local transmissions while 20 were returnees from South Africa.

The health ministry further announced 46 new recoveries, leaving the national recovery rate at 81.4 percent while active cases shot up to 1,482.

As of December 5, Zimbabwe has now recorded 10 617 cases 8 844 recoveries and 291 deaths.
