No fewer than 550 new coronavirus (COVID-19) infections have been recorded in Nigeria, according to the country’s health agency.
The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC), also reported that one person died of the disease
The NCDC, which made this known via its website on Tuesday, said that the new infections were reported from 16 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
The public health Agency stated that the new infections had brought the total number of cases in the country to 70,195.
NCDC reports that Nigeria has so far tested 817,913 persons since the first confirmed case relating to the COVID-19 pandemic was announced on Feb. 27, 2020.
The NCDC said that the country had recorded a total of 1,182 deaths, 70,195 confirmed infections, and discharged 65,110 patients across the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory.
The health agency reported one COVID-19-related death in the last 24 hours in the country, adding that 163 patients were treated and discharged from different isolation centres across the country.
The Federal Capital Territory (FCT), with Lagos retaining the highest figure of 219 cases.
Other states were Kaduna 52, Kwara 19, Kano and Rivers, 15 each, Sokoto 10, Enugu 9, and Gombe 8, Plateau and Osun recorded 7 each, Anambra and Oyo 5 each, Jigawa and Ogun, 4 each, Bauchi 2, Edo 1, and the FCT, 168.
It was reported that the 550 new cases recorded as of Dec. 9 represent the highest the country has recorded since Aug. 23, when 601 cases were reported. The country’s highest daily COVID-19 cases was 745, recorded on June 19.
It said that a multi-sectoral national emergency operations centre was activated at Level 3, and had continued to coordinate the national response activities.
