South Africa’s Minister of Health, Dr Zweli Mkhize, has announced 3,250 new cases of the novel coronavirus (COVID-19), taking the country’s total confirmed infections to 775,502.
The new cases, he said, came from 29,437 tests.
The minister also confirmed that 118 COVID-19 related deaths – 51 in the Eastern Cape; 30 in the Western Cape; 24 in the Free State; seven in Gauteng; four in Limpopo and two in KwaZulu-Nata – were recorded in the last 24 hours as of Wednesday evening.
The development brings total coronavirus deaths in South Africa to 21,201.
Meanwhile, the authorities in Western Cape province have expressed deep concern about a sharp jump in Covid-19 cases.
The virus is showing signs of a resurgence in parts of South Africa – the most badly affected country on the continent.
After a long lull, infection rates are beginning to rise in some areas, particularly along the country’s southern coastline.
Doctors in Cape Town and in Port Elizabeth are reporting a spike in hospital admissions.
