COVID-19 Surge Forces Lockdown In Nairobi, Others

Uhuru Kenyatta, Kenyan President has announced a new lockdown in capital city Nairobi and four other counties in the East African country after the country faced its worst COVID-19 surge.

Kenyatta on Friday banned movement in Nairobi and banned physical schooling. He added that there will be stricter curfews in the country as those will be essential to how well the disease is curtailed and contained.

Kenyatta in the televised address said cases have increased tenfold since January and hospital admissions have gone up by 52% as he called for drastic measures.

Kenya is battling three strains of COVID-19 with the B.1.1.7, B.1.351 strain and new strain which has hit neighbours Uganda and Rwanda, the A.23.1 strain all wreaking a havoc in the country.

The President also banned activities in nightclubs, schools and worship centres in the country while a previous curfew set for 10 p.m has been reviewed to 8 p.m.

The nation has not banned air travels as it hopes to contain the disease, and situation which Kenyatta describes as being gripped by the third wave.
