The United Nations (UN) agencies on Tuesday, said Sudan’s lingering crisis is worsening the child mortality rate, with over 1,200 children dead and thousands at risk of losing their lives to suspected measles and malnutrition in the country’s refugee camps.
According to UN Chief of Public Health at the U.N. Refugee Agency (UNHCR), Dr. Allen Maina, who spoke at the UN briefing in Geneva, at least 1,200 children have died since the clashes erupted over five months ago between the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and paramilitary group, Rapid Support Forces (RSF).
Dr. Maina said direct attacks from the SAF and RSF have made it impossible for the country’s healthcare sector to function effectively due to a lack of manpower and medications for the sick or injured.
Unfortunately, we fear numbers will continue rising because of strained resources,” he said.
He also said efforts to have refugees vaccinated were proving to be a herculean task, hence the surge in cases of mortality and illnesses.
