The Cross River State House of Assembly has imposed a three-month suspension on Theresa Ushie, the Chairman of Bekwarra Local Government Area. This decision follows a petition submitted by members of the Bekwarra Legislative Council, who accused her of abusing her position and misappropriating funds.
Matthew Okache, the Chief Press Secretary to the Speaker, issued a statement confirming that this resolution was approved during a plenary session held on Tuesday in Calabar. He noted that the suspension adheres to the provisions outlined in Section 14(3) of the Cross River State Local Government Law.
It stated “In a resolution passed on the floor of the House, the Assembly directed that Hon. Theresa Ushie step aside for 90 days to allow for an independent investigation into the allegations without interference.

“The Assembly considered and upheld the impeachment notice submitted by eight out of ten councilors from the Bekwarra Legislative Council. The petition, dated May 19, 2025, accused Hon. Ushie of financial misappropriation, administrative highhandedness, and gross abuse of power, alleging that she had consistently undermined due process and the rule of law in the discharge of her duties.”
The statement also indicated that Egbung Odama, the Vice Chairman of Bekwarra Local Government, has been instructed to take over as Acting Chairman for the duration of Theresa Ushie’s suspension. His responsibilities will focus on maintaining stability and ensuring the smooth operation of the council during this period.
Elvert Ayambem, the Speaker of the House, emphasised that the assembly’s decision reflects its dedication to promoting transparency, accountability, and good governance at the grassroots level.
“I charge the House committees on Judiciary and public petition to commence a thorough investigation into the allegations and report their findings within the suspension window”, he added.
Effort to speak with the suspended LG Chiara, Ushie, failed as text messages and calls put across to her were never returned or replied as of the time of filing this report.
