Crystal Palace Sacks Patrick Vieira After Winless Run

After a terrible run of only one victory in 14 Premier League games that put Crystal Palace in a relegation battle, Patrick Vieira was fired as manager of the team on Friday.

The London team, managed by the former France and Arsenal player, is now 12th in the table but is only three points above the relegation zone.

“It is with enormous regret that this difficult decision has been made,” said chairman Steve Parish.

“Ultimately, results in recent months have placed us in a precarious league position and we felt a change is necessary to give us the best chance of retaining Premier League status.”

Palace said in a statement that “the process to appoint a new manager is under way”.

Osian Roberts, Kristian Wilson, and Said Aigoun are the other three members of Vieira’s coaching team who have left Selhurst Park.

Parish added: “Patrick has given his all to the club, and we all thank him and his team for their service.”

Before the 2021/22 season began, 46-year-old Vieira took over as Roy Hodgson’s replacement and guided Palace to a 12th-place finish.

Only three clubs have scored fewer goals this season, as they have only scored 21 goals in 27 games. Their third straight defeat came on Wednesday as Brighton defeated them 1-0.

Just five points separate the lowest nine clubs in the Premier League as the season nears its conclusion.

On Sunday, Palace will visit league leaders Arsenal. With the Arsenal, Vieira won three Premier League championships as a player. He has also managed Nice and New York City in the past.

In an illustrious playing career, the Frenchman won the World Cup and the European Championship.
