Matheus Cunha says he has fulfilled a lifelong ambition after completing his high-profile move to Manchester United from Wolverhampton Wanderers, describing it as a “dream” to wear the club’s famous red shirt.
The 26-year-old Brazil international officially joined United on Thursday, having signed a five-year contract with the option of an additional year. The transfer had been effectively secured on June 1 when United triggered a £62.5 million release clause in his Wolves deal, pending visa clearance and a medical.
“It is hard to put into words my feelings about becoming a Manchester United player,” said Cunha. “Ever since I was a child in Brazil watching Premier League games at my grandmother’s house, United was my favourite English team and I dreamed of wearing the red shirt.
“I want to thank my family and everyone who has helped me make that dream a reality. I can’t wait to get started in pre-season, meet my teammates, and work hard to become a valuable part of the team.”

Cunha enjoyed an impressive season at Wolves, netting 17 goals in all competitions and earning the club’s Players’ Player of the Year award. His arrival at Old Trafford marks the first signing under head coach Ruben Amorim, who is overseeing a squad rebuild after a disappointing domestic campaign and a Europa League final defeat to Tottenham.
The Brazilian forward is expected to bolster a United attack that struggled for consistency throughout the season. His technical flair and sharp finishing are seen as key attributes as the club looks to re-establish itself among English football’s elite.
Cunha recently assisted the winning goal for Brazil in their World Cup qualifying victory over Paraguay, further underlining his international pedigree.
United’s director of football Jason Wilcox welcomed the signing, saying: “Bringing in Matheus was one of our main priorities for this summer, so we are delighted to have completed his signing so early in the window.
“He has all the qualities we are looking for as we seek to build a strong, dynamic and entertaining team capable of challenging for the biggest honours.”
Brentford’s Bryan Mbeumo has also been linked with a move to Old Trafford as United continue to pursue reinforcements. However, their failure to secure Champions League qualification may complicate their remaining transfer plans.
