Cyclone Chido has killed 13 people in Malawi, following its path of destruction across the Indian Ocean territories of Mayotte and Mozambique. The storm, which lost strength after moving more than 500 kilometres inland, continued to wreak havoc as it passed through Malawi on Monday, injuring nearly 30 people and affecting approximately 45,000 people.
Blantyre, Malawi’s second-largest city, was among the hardest-hit areas. The storm affected 10,159 households, displacing 227 people, according to the Department of Disaster Management Affairs in Malawi.
Despite its weakening, the cyclone left a trail of devastation in a country where 71 percent of the population lives in extreme poverty, as reported by the World Bank.
In Mayotte, the French overseas territory in the Indian Ocean, Cyclone Chido claimed 31 lives and injured over 1,000 people. Mozambique also suffered significant losses, with at least 45 deaths and nearly 500 injuries, according to official reports released on Wednesday.
