President Félix Tshisekedi of the Democratic Republic of Congo will travel to Kenya to sign the East African Community (EAC) Treaty on Thursday.
The EAC is now chaired by Kenya, and Tshisekedi is due to sign the treaty in Nairobi before President Uhuru Kenyatta.
Tshisekedi’s communication office said he “will have intense activities, alongside his Kenyan counterpart Uhuru Kenyatta”.
The EAC Heads of State admitted Kinshasa as the Community’s seventh member on March 29 during their 19th Ordinary Summit, after a recommendation by the Council of Ministers.
The meeting was notified by Kenyatta, the Summit chairperson, that the Democratic Republic of Congo had met all of the requirements for entry set forth in the Treaty for the Establishment of the EAC.
President Kenyatta stated at the time that he hoped the DRC will sign the Treaty of Accession before April 14, 2022.
Tshisekedi will be visiting Kenya for the third time as president.
Ministers of Foreign Affairs, Agriculture, Fisheries and Livestock will accompany the Congolese president.
A cooperation pact in agriculture is also anticipated to be signed between the DRC and Kenya.
Tshisekedi is scheduled to attend a summit on April 9 with Kenyan, Ugandan, and Rwandan officials.
