Aliko Dangote, the President and Chief Executive of Dangote Group, has conveyed his support for President Bola Tinubu’s initiative to transition from petroleum products to Compressed Natural Gas (CNG).
During a recent event, the billionaire business mogul stated that the company’s investments in CNG align with Nigeria’s Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) as outlined in the Paris Agreement, which targets achieving net-zero emissions by 2060.
“In this pursuit of transition to clean energy, we are optimistic of a remarkable accomplishment by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, as he has taken the lead in the nation’s drive towards energy efficiency. This presupposes private sector intervention to support this noble idea initiated by the President,” Dangote said.
He pointed out that the company’s pioneering use of CNG has positioned it as the leading operator of CNG trucks in Nigeria, highlighting that this move supports President Tinubu’s aim of improving the country’s energy independence and fostering a more secure energy future.
“We are now using CNG vehicles, especially with the new policy of the Federal Government, launched under the Renewed Hope Agenda by His Excellency, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. We are committed to a cleaner and greener future,” Dangote said.
In the same vein, President Tinubu highlighted the pressing need for Nigeria to harness its abundant natural gas resources within the transportation sector. He mentioned that CNG transportation is essential for Nigeria’s economy, indicating a notable change in the nation’s approach towards public transport and energy consumption.
“Utilising natural gas to power Nigeria’s transportation industry is the next way to go,” he stated.
Dangote Cement stated that its investment exceeding $280 million not only reinforces its position as a leader in the CNG sector but also demonstrates its commitment to addressing climate change and facilitating a shift towards a low-carbon economy.
Arvind Pathak, the Group Managing Director of Dangote Cement Plc, mentioned that the investment is intended to acquire 100% CNG trucks as part of a long-term strategy to convert its entire fleet to CNG.
Pathak stated, “By mid-2026, Dangote Cement aims to operate a fleet predominantly powered by CNG. To facilitate this transformation, we are investing in expanding our CNG fuelling infrastructure, ensuring that our growing fleet has reliable access to CNG as our fuel.”
Pathak stated that the company’s CNG infrastructure has positively influenced Nigeria’s shift to cleaner fuels.
He added that the CNG station located at Obajana, which can refuel over 3,000 trucks, showcases the company’s commitment. He said the construction of a second station in Ibese to support fleet operations is in the works.
