The AU-IGAD-UNITAMS Trilateral Mechanism launched its conference for the Juba Peace Agreement (JPA) on January 31, 2023 in Khartoum’s Friendship Hall. However, there was outrage among many of the displaced persons from Darfur, as their invitations were either cancelled or not sent at all.
Awatif Abdelrahman reported that three women, requested by the Centre for Peace Studies in Nyala, were not invited to the conference.
Yagoub Furi, head of the Darfur Displaced and Refugee Camps Coordination noted that the conference may not be successful due to the exclusion of the displaced persons in Darfur.
The Sudan People Liberation Movement North faction under the leadership of Malik Agar also boycotted the Juba Peace Agreement conference due to the selection of participants in the workshop.
The agreement, which was agreed upon by Sudan’s military and dozens of civilian leaders on December 5, 2022, promises to relinquish much political power.
It has faced criticism, however, as it excludes former rebels and other individuals from participating in the transitional government.
This has been met with further opposition from the displaced Darfuris, who feel that their voices are not being heard.
