Africans were absolutely thrilled to see superstar musician Davido take the stage after several weeks of being inactive on socials and away from the public.
In a history-making event, the Nigerian Afrobeats star joined the duo of Aisha and Trinidad Cardona to perform ‘Hayya Hayya’ (Better Together) at the finals of the 2022 FIFA World Cup yesterday, Sunday, 19th December.
Although the DMW label boss was scheduled to perform at the beginning of the football tournament, but couldn’t, fans gloated for weeks over the news. In fact for several days through the games, Davido trended online as fans hoped and waited to see him perform and achieve this milestone in his career.
Finally at the tournament’s closing ceremony, which FIFA dubbed ‘A Night to Remember’, The trio including Davido performed the FIFA theme song before the estimated 88,000 fans in attendance at Lusail Iconic Stadium, Qatar, making him the first Nigerian artiste to perform on a FIFA World Cup stage.
Other African star who thrilled fans at the much smaller, FIFA Fan festival were Ghana’s Stonebwoy, Nigerian Dancehall star Patoranking and ‘Mr No bad songs’ Kizz DANIEL.
Although Davido is the first Nigerian to grace the World Cup stage, other Africans have been privileged to perform at the acclaimed arena in the past. In 1998, Senegalese singer Youssou N’Dour performed at the tournament’s opening ceremony hosted by France and Grammy-winning singer Angelique Kidjo performed at the 2010 FIFA World Cup held in South Africa.
