A cyclone that struck northern Madagascar on Wednesday has resulted in at least six fatalities and forced 2,000 people out of their homes. Local news sources report significant damage caused by flooding, impacting roads and bridges in the region.
According to the Disaster Management Authority (BNGRC), cited by AFP news agency, the death toll from Cyclone Gamane stands at 11. Of these, six individuals drowned, while others were killed by falling trees or collapsing houses.
Gen Elack Andriakaja, director-general of BNGRC, noted the unusual stationary movement of the cyclone, stating, “It’s rare to have a cyclone like this. Its movement is nearly stationary.” He emphasised the devastating impact on infrastructure and the serious consequences for the affected population, including significant flooding.
