According to local media reports, a dam collapsed in eastern Sudan on Monday due to heavy rains, resulting in at least 60 confirmed fatalities.
Several individuals are still unaccounted for following the collapse of the Arbat Dam, which serves as a crucial source of fresh water for Port Sudan City.
Reports from the Sudanese daily Al-Taghyeer indicate that villages near the dam were inundated by floods, causing widespread destruction after the water crashed into surrounding mountains before returning to the villages.
According to witnesses, hundreds of residents sought refuge on mountain peaks to escape the flood threat, while others remained trapped in the affected villages.
Constructed in 2003 to collect rainwater for dry season use, the facility has reportedly not received regular maintenance recently.
