The death toll from an ambush in a wildlife reserve in Northern Benin near the border with Burkina Faso and Niger has risen to nine.

On Tuesday, five persons including a Frenchman and a soldier were killed by unknown assailants, an incident which sparked fears amongst citizens.

The death toll has however risen to nine as of the time of filing this report with the Country’s military attributing the attack to insurgents from neighbouring West-African nations.

No group has claimed responsibility for the incident, which is believed to be the deadliest in the West-African country in recent times, with reports suggesting that insurgents’ attacks from other countries in the region have spread to Northern Benin.

In January, two Beninese troops were killed after their vehicle hit an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) in the Northern Atakora region of the country.
