Death Toll from Jigawa Flood Hits 28

The death toll from the catastrophic flood in Jigawa State, North-West Nigeria, has risen to 28. In an interview, Dr. Haruna Mairiga, Executive Secretary of the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), disclosed that at least 6,000 families have been displaced as four local government areas, Auyo, Buji, Jahun, and Miga, were affected by the flood.

He said the situation forced the state government to establish over 20 internally displaced persons (IDP) camps, adding that many of the victims are being sheltered in primary schools.

“Our agency has registered over 5,000 internally displaced persons in these camps, excluding nursing babies,” Mairiga stated, adding that some areas have up to three IDP camps due to the extent of the flooding.
Mairiga said the state government has provided essential supplies to the IDP camps to help those affected by the flood.
