Death Toll in Sudan’s West Darfur Clashes Rises to 132

The governor of West Darfur state says the number of people now known to have died during several days of clashes has risen to 132.

Mohamed Abdallah Douma criticized the government’s response saying a promise of additional troops to help protect civilians had not been fulfilled.

Members of the Masalit and Arab communities have fought since Saturday in and around the state capital El Geneina using guns and heavy weaponry.

Late last year, UN peacekeepers withdrew from Darfur.

People there have called for notorious militias in Darfur to be disarmed.

The violence which started on Saturday is the latest in a resurgence of violence in the Darfur region since the signing of a peace agreement late last year and the withdrawal of UN peacekeepers.

To reduce the effect of this violence on lives and properties, the  Security and Defence Council  declared a state of emergency for West Darfur on Monday, April 5 2021.
