A government official on Tuesday said the death toll from two landslides in southern Ethiopia has risen to 157 and the number could increase further.
Officials said that after the first landslide buried people in Gofa zone, Southern Ethiopia regional state, a second one caught many who gathered to help on Monday morning.
Head of the National Disaster Response agency in Gofa Zone, Markos Melese, said
“Searching still going on and there are bodies that are yet to be recovered. The area is very challenging,”
“We have so far recovered 157 bodies from two villages … We believe the number will increase.”
On Monday, the death toll reached 55, it affected mostly children, women and police officers.
