The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has urged Nigerians to throw their weight behind the fight against terrorism and insurgency in Nigeria, as the Military cannot do it all alone.
Speaking at a bi-weekly media update on military operations in Abuja on Thursday, the Director of Defence Media Operations, Major General Edward Buba, said every Nigerian has a role to play in tackling insecurity in the country, and it is not only the duty of the military.
“Experience reveals that military alone cannot end terrorism and insurgency.
“Our mission against terrorists, insurgents and perpetrators of insecurity in the country is not one that should be seen as the exclusive preserve of just the military alone.
“This underscores the need for our counter-terrorism and counter-insurgency war to remain a reflection of a whole of society’s commitment. The perpetrators of the insecurity are not ghosts, they have families, relations and are from villages and communities in the country,” General Buba said.
The Defence Spokesperson explained that supporting the Nigerian troops in the fight against terrorism will yield massive results while calling on Nigerians to show commitment to the cause.
“… such commitment should reflect and align with the will of the people,” he said.
Recall that Chief of Defence Staff, Maj.-Gen. Christopher Musa upon his assumption into office in June 2023, spoke tough on the military’s commitment to ending terrorism and other related crimes in Nigeria.
“As the CDS, my promise to Nigeria is that we’ll continue to improve on our mandate of sustaining peace and tranquility in our country.
“The Nigerian armed forces will come out in full force while safeguarding the safety and security of the citizenry,” the CDS had said.
Insurgency and terrorism in Nigeria continues to impede the socio- economic and political development of the country.
In spite of efforts from the Nigerian government to combat terrorism in the country, regular terrorist activities continue to threaten the peace and security of citizens.
