Employers of labour and self-employed individuals in Delta State have been given deadlines for filing their annual tax returns for the year 2023. According to a statement issued by the Executive Chairman of the Delta State Internal Revenue Service, Mr. Solomon Ighrakpata, employers have until January 31, 2024, while self-employed individuals have until March 31, 2024, to comply with the Personal Income Tax Act of 2004, as amended.
The statement highlighted the obligation of employers to file a return with the relevant tax authority, disclosing all emoluments paid to employees no later than January 31 of every year. Failure to comply with this law can result in penalties, with corporate bodies facing a penalty of five hundred thousand naira and individuals facing fifty thousand naira upon conviction.
To simplify the tax administration process, the tax administration in the state will be fully automated by the end of the first quarter of 2024. Henceforth, the filing of annual tax returns will be done online. Taxpayers are advised to access their self-service pages or portals through the provided website for further information on how to engage with the Revenue Service.
The Chairman outlined the required information for filing online, including Pay As You Earn (PAYE) payments from January to December 2023, evidence of directors’ tax payments from 2021 to 2023, copies of receipts for withholding taxes from January to December 2023, evidence of payment of business premises/renewal for the year 2023, evidence of payment of development levy for 2023, a copy of the lease agreement and rent receipts for occupied office space, and salary payroll projections for the year 2024.
