Democrats Push Trump for Clarity on Alleged $10 Million Egyptian Contribution

Democratic leaders on the U.S. House Oversight Committee have formally requested that former President Donald Trump address allegations regarding a possible $10 million campaign contribution from the Egyptian government during his 2016 presidential campaign. This demand follows a recent Washington Post report about a secret Justice Department investigation probing whether Trump received the funds from Egyptian President Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi.

Representatives Jamie Raskin and Robert Garcia have emphasized the need for transparency, stating in a letter, “The American people deserve to know whether a former president — and a current candidate for president — took an illegal campaign contribution from a brutal foreign dictator.” The letter urges Trump to provide documentation proving that he did not receive funds from the Egyptian regime.

A spokesperson for Trump’s campaign dismissed the accusations as “textbook Fake News,” asserting that the investigation found no wrongdoing and was closed. The allegations being reported are baseless, and the media continues to be misled by Deep State Trump-haters and bad faith actors pushing hoaxes.”

According to the Washington Post, the investigation into the alleged contribution began in 2017 after U.S. intelligence suggested that Al-Sisi intended to transfer $10 million to Trump. Investigators uncovered a $10 million cash withdrawal from an account linked to Egypt’s General Intelligence Service just before Trump took office.

Efforts to subpoena Trump’s bank records have since been blocked by senior Justice Department officials, resulting in the closure of the investigation due to a lack of evidence. In their letter, Raskin and Garcia also seek an explanation for the source of funds used in a $10 million loan that Trump injected into his 2016 campaign, which was later forgiven.
