At least 55 persons have died following a landslide in Gofa Zone, Kencho Shacha Gozdi district of the South Ethiopia regional state.
District Chief Misikir Mitku said they’ve recovered dozens of bodies but warned that the death toll may rise.
President of the South Ethiopia regional state, Tilahun Kebede also confirmed the tragedy and the death toll and told state media that emergency operation was underway to assist those displaced by the landslide. He promised to ensure a coordinated response to ensure safety for those at risk.
Government functionaries have condoled with families of those impacted by the disaster.
Authorities enjoined residents in surrounding towns to take necessary caution and avoid flood-prone places.
