Pascal Dozie, iconic banker, telecoms pioneer, and founder of the defunct Diamond Bank, has died at the age of 86, Arise News reports. His death comes just a day before his 87th birthday, marking the passing of one of Nigeria’s most influential business figures.
Born on April 9, 1939, in Egbu, Owerri, Imo State, Dozie was widely known for his brilliance, foresight, and quiet leadership. He began his early education at Our Lady’s School, Emekuku, before proceeding to the London School of Economics, where he earned a degree in Economics followed by a master’s in Administrative Science.
Dozie made history in 1990 when he founded Diamond Bank, a trailblazing financial institution that redefined customer-focused banking in Nigeria. Under his guidance, the bank became one of the nation’s most respected brands before its eventual merger with Access Bank. After his retirement, he handed over the reins of the bank to his son, Uzoma Dozie, ensuring the continuity of his vision.

Beyond banking, Pascal Dozie was a critical player in Nigeria’s telecoms revolution. He served as the pioneer chairman of MTN Nigeria, helping steer the company’s early growth into the country’s leading mobile network provider. His leadership was instrumental in shaping Nigeria’s telecommunications industry, making mobile communication accessible to millions.
Dozie was revered not only for his business achievements but also for his humility, integrity, and commitment to national development. These qualities earned him respect across corporate, public, and international circles.
In recognition of his immense contributions to Nigeria’s economy and development, he was awarded the national honour of Commander of the Order of the Niger (CON).
His passing marks the end of an era, leaving behind a lasting legacy of innovation, resilience, and service to nation-building.
