France’s head coach, Didier Deschamps, will end his tenure after the 2026 World Cup, according to a source close to the team. Deschamps, who led Les Bleus to World Cup glory in 2018, has been at the helm since 2012, guiding the national side to three major finals.
A World Cup winner as both player and coach, Deschamps captained France to their first triumph in 1998 and joined an elite group of individuals to achieve the feat in both roles. His managerial achievements include leading France to victory in the 2021 Nations League and runner-up finishes at Euro 2016 and the 2022 World Cup.
At 56, Deschamps is already France’s longest-serving head coach. Reports suggest he will announce his decision in a televised interview with Brigitte Macron on Wednesday.
The 2026 World Cup, hosted by the US, Mexico, and Canada, will mark the conclusion of Deschamps’ contract. Meanwhile, France will kick off their European qualifiers later this year and face Croatia in the Nations League quarter-finals in March.
