The import of Automotive Gas Oil (Diesel) into Nigeria saw a significant surge, increasing by 22.66 percent to 4.94 billion litres in 2023 from 4 billion litres in 2022. This substantial rise underscores the growing demand for diesel in the country.
In the most recent Petroleum Products Distribution Data, the National Bureau of Statistics revealed that 109.39 million litres of diesel were produced locally in 2023, an increase from the 102.47 million litres reported in 2022. This marks a 6.76% growth rate in locally produced diesel in Nigeria.
According to the NBS data for 2023, Nigeria relies heavily on diesel imports to meet its consumption demand. Conversely, the data also indicated a 13.77% decrease in the import of Premium Motor Spirit (petrol), with 20.30 billion litres imported in 2023, down from 23.54 billion litres in 2022.
It is worth noting that in April 2024, Dangote Refinery began selling diesel domestically in Nigeria.
