Disgraced film producer Harvey Weinstein has been diagnosed with chronic myeloid leukemia, according to US media reports on Monday. The 72-year-old is receiving treatment in a New York prison, where he is serving a 16-year sentence after being convicted of rape and sexual assault.
The diagnosis follows a series of health complications for the former Hollywood mogul, including emergency heart surgery last month. Harvey Weinstein appeared visibly frail during a court appearance in September.
Weinstein is also facing a potential retrial after his 2020 New York conviction was overturned by an appeals court in April, which ruled that certain testimonies had been erroneously included.
Weinstein’s downfall began in 2017 when allegations of sexual misconduct by more than 80 women, including high-profile actresses like Angelina Jolie and Gwyneth Paltrow, helped fuel the #MeToo movement. Despite his convictions, Weinstein maintains that all sexual encounters were consensual.
