Disturbing Footage Captures Nigerian Lecturer Harassing Female Student

Gender-Based-Violence

Fresh concerns have been raised over the rising cases of sexual assault in Nigerian universities after a viral video showed a lecturer engaging in inappropriate physical contact with a female student in his office.

The lecturer, who is allegedly from the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN), was observed in the footage trying to have his way with the female student, despite her unwillingness to indulge him.

In a separate incident, another lecturer alleged to be from the University of Port Harcourt, (Uniport) was also captured on camera attempting to coerce a female student into having sexual relations with him.

These trending videos have reignited concerns regarding sexual harassment and misconduct by lecturers, behaviors that are unfortunately becoming increasingly common in Nigerian universities.

Instances of sexual abuse and exchanges of sexual favours for academic grades have become pervasive in many Nigerian universities.

Civil Society Organisations and other concerned entities have consistently urged the government to address this problem. However, little to no action has been taken to tackle the issue effectively.

Last year, law students at the University of Calabar (UNICAL) organised a protest on campus against sexual harassment, targeting the then Faculty Dean, Professor Cyril Ndifon.

Ndifon’s case is still in court, and he has since been suspended from the university.
