DR Congo and Zambia Share Points in 1-1 Draw at AFCON 2023

In an entertaining Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) Group F clash at the Stade Laurent Pokou in San Pedro, Cote d’Ivoire, DR Congo and Zambia played to a 1-1 draw, showcasing a thrilling encounter.

Zambia, featuring Patson Daka in attack with Fashion Sakala and Lubambo Musonda supporting on the wings, took the lead against the run of play in the 23rd minute. Midfielder Kings Kangwa capitalised on a goalkeeping error to put Zambia ahead.

Despite the lead, Zambia struggled to assert dominance in the attacking third, with Daka and Sakala unable to pose significant problems for their opponents. Meanwhile, DR Congo, with Cedric Bakambu leading the attack and Theo Bongonda and Yoane Wissa on the flanks, gradually gained control.

Before halftime, DR Congo deservedly levelled the score as Wissa converted Bakambu’s low cross, making it 1-1.

The second half continued with high intensity, and DR Congo, finishing strongly in the first half, maintained the pressure. Bakambu and Wissa continued to threaten, and the Leopards thought they had won a penalty, only for the decision to be overturned by VAR.

Ultimately, both teams settled for a point from the Group F match, leaving DR Congo behind Morocco on goal difference after the Atlas Lions defeated Tanzania 3-0 earlier.

Morocco leads Group F with three points, followed by the DR Congo and Zambia with one point each. DR Congo is set to face Morocco next Sunday, January 21st, at the Stade Laurent Pokou in San Pedro, while Zambia will take on Tanzania.
