DR Congo Protests Against Regional Force Enter Day Two

DR Congo Protests Against Regional force Enter Day Two (News Central TV)

For the second day in a row, hundreds of protesters have taken to the streets of Goma, a city in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo. This follows violent clashes between them and Congolese security forces, in which at least two people have been killed.

The demonstrators are accusing the UN and the East African Regional Force of failing to support the Congolese against the M23 rebel group, who have been intensifying their operations in the region.

Protests have paralysed the city, with protesters throwing stones and petrol bombs at the UN headquarters in Goma, and security forces firing tear gas to disperse them. It has been reported that a church in one of the neighbourhoods was destroyed during the clashes.

The rebels have taken control of large areas of the volatile North Kivu province and are threatening to march on Goma, the region’s commercial hub. This has already caused hundreds of deaths and forced thousands of people to flee their homes.
