Further sanctions against military and militia leaders participating in the ongoing war in the eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo will be announced by the US, UK, and EU.
These new sanctions will target military leaders from Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The two nations have traded allegations regarding the turmoil in the DR Congo’s mineral-rich area.
Fighting between Congolese forces and rebel groups has intensified recently in Eastern DR Congo, resulting in the deaths of thousands of people and the displacement of millions more.
According to diplomats, the list also includes militia leaders supported by Rwanda, the Islamic State offshoot ADF, and the M23 rebel group.
In recent weeks, fighting has intensified in the east, and all parties involved have been accused of breaking a cease-fire agreement. Peace negotiations to stop the bloodshed, supported by the region, have failed.
Millions of people have been displaced from their homes, including UN forces, and thousands of civilians have died.
