A new strain of gonorrhoea, a sexually transmitted disease resistant to standard antibiotics, is circulating in Kenyan capital, Nairobi, Researchers at Kenya Medical Research Institute (KEMRI) have confirmed.

Most of the strain are found among female sex workers, many of who erroneously assume being on a daily HIV prevention pill automatically prevent them from sexually transmitted diseases and were ignoring the use of latex.

With more than 80 million cases reported globally every year, Gonorrhoea is one of the most common sexually transmitted diseases worldwide.

The medical investigation was conducted on about 350 commercial sex workers at a Nairobi hospital which reported high cases of gonorrhoea.

For higher pay, three out of four participants admitted to having unprotected sex with their partners and clients. Some of them said they slept with at least 15 clients every week.

The researchers are advocating for more testing to determine how widespread the problem is in the country.
