Earthquake in Iran Claims 4 Lives, Injures 120

Four people have lost their lives, and 120 others injured following an earthquake in north-eastern Iran on Tuesday, officials confirmed.

According to Iran’s state TV, the magnitude 5.0 quake struck the town of Kashmar, approximately 800 km (500 miles) east of the capital, Tehran.

Rescue teams have been dispatched to the affected area, and three temporary camps have been established, Red Crescent officials reported.

Iran, situated on major seismic faults, experiences an earthquake nearly every day. Notably, in 2003, a magnitude 6.6 earthquake devastated the historic city of Bam, resulting in 26,000 deaths. More recently, a magnitude 7 earthquake in western Iran in 2017 claimed over 600 lives and injured more than 9,000 people.

The recent quake also impacted neighbouring countries Turkmenistan and Afghanistan.
