Thirteen people have been confirmed dead following a cholera outbreak in the Ebonyi and Izzi local government areas of Ebonyi State.
Initially, ten fatalities were reported, but Ebonyi State’s Commissioner for Health, Moses Ekuma, announced that three more deaths have occurred, with a total of 69 cases now recorded.
Ekuma stated that those affected are receiving treatment at various centers set up in the impacted communities. He credited the state government’s swift response and Governor Francis Nwifuru’s approval for procuring medical supplies as critical steps in managing the outbreak.
The commissioner urged residents to report any suspected cholera cases to local health centers and follow guidance on prevention and treatment. He also emphasized the importance of practicing good hygiene, as the outbreak has been linked to open defecation and poor sanitation, with many communities relying on streams for drinking water.
