The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has condemned the recent violent attacks in Northern Benin, which claimed dozens of lives.
The assaults, carried out by unidentified armed individuals on Wednesday in the Point Trible area, left several casualties, including members of Benin’s security forces.
In a statement issued on Sunday, the ECOWAS Commission expressed its condolences to the government, security forces, and citizens of Benin, as well as to the families of the soldiers who died in the line of duty. Wishes for a speedy recovery were also extended to the injured.
“The ECOWAS Commission unequivocally condemns the heinous attacks in the Point Trible area on January 8, 2025, which resulted in the tragic loss of lives. We extend our deepest sympathies to the people of Benin and the families of the brave soldiers who died protecting their nation,” the statement read.
Call for Regional Cooperation
ECOWAS reaffirmed its commitment to combating terrorism in West Africa and highlighted the importance of its Counterterrorism Plan of Action.
The organisation urged member states to strengthen cooperation in intelligence sharing and border security to address the growing threats posed by terrorism.
“ECOWAS calls on member states to intensify efforts in intelligence sharing and border security. We express our solidarity with the government and people of Benin and reiterate our commitment to supporting efforts to ensure the safety and security of all West African citizens,” the statement added.
The regional body emphasised its determination to eradicate terrorism in all its forms and pledged ongoing support to member states in safeguarding their communities.
