ECOWAS Condemns Killing of Nigerien Soldiers, Urges Constitutional Order

The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has denounced the slaying of a minimum of seventeen Nigerien soldiers in a recent ambush near the Mali border.

In a statement released on Wednesday, in response to the killing of the Nigerien soldiers, ECOWAS articulated that the nation had become susceptible due to President Mohamed Bazoum‘s ousting by the military coup.

The West African bloc offered a warning to the coup plotters regarding the significance of adhering to its directive by reinstating constitutional order. The statement states, “ECOWAS has learned with sorrow about multiple assaults by armed factions in the Republic of Niger, resulting in the demise of numerous Nigerien soldiers.

“ECOWAS censures these assaults and conveys its heartfelt sympathies to the citizens of Niger and the kin of the soldiers who have lost their lives.

“ECOWAS appeals to the CNSP-military leadership in Niger to reestablish constitutional order and to prioritize the security of the nation, which has grown increasingly fragile since the attempted coup d’état against the democratically elected President, H.E. Mohamed Bazoum.”
