Heads of State from the West African regional group, ECOWAS, will gather in Ghana on Friday to examine Mali’s Crisis following last year’s coup.

Assimi Goita, Mali’s interim president, has however declined an offer to attend in person.

It’s uncertain if he’ll be able to participate in the summit via video link.

Mali’s crisis worsened in January as West African countries closed their borders with Mali and announced an embargo after the military leadership scrapped a promise to hold elections the following month to restore civilian rule.

A court approved the suspension of financial restrictions imposed on the military rulers on Thursday.

Exactly one month ago, News Central reported that an envoy from ECOWAS had arrived in Mali for talks with the military junta over restoring civilian rule in the volatile country.

Former Nigerian president Goodluck Jonathan, represented the 15-nation Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) team, including the leader Colonel Assimi Goita.

Mali, a nation of 21 million, is governed by a junta that seized power in August 2020 and has so far resisted international pressure to swiftly restore civilian rule.
