Ecuador has declared a 60-day national emergency in response to worsening wildfires and a severe drought, the country’s emergency management agency announced on Monday.
The government’s decision comes after forest fires destroyed more than 10,000 hectares in southern Ecuador this month alone.
Water shortages and drought conditions have further intensified the crisis, prompting urgent action.
The environment ministry has approved the state of emergency to prioritise efforts to control the fires and address the water crisis.
Authorities are working to protect affected communities and prevent further environmental damage.
