The Nigerian Guild of Editors (NGE) has restated the importance of media freedom, freedom of expression, and access to public information as essential elements of democracy that should be central to the Nigerian government’s principles and initiatives.
The professional association of editors and media leaders in Nigeria also acknowledged the vital role journalists, media professionals, and independent media played in upholding the country’s democracy despite current economic challenges.
NGE issued a press release on Thursday, May 2 to commemorate World Press Freedom Day on May 3, 2024
In the statement signed by its president, Eze Anaba, and general secretary, Dr Iyobosa Uwugiaren, the guild urged the National Assembly to draft and pass legislation safeguarding journalists who report on matters of public interest.
According to the Guild, this is important to protect journalists from abusive and strategic lawsuits intended to stifle their voices.
The NGE also urged all stakeholders in the media landscape to advocate for press freedom to address challenges such as censorship, harassment, imprisonment, and violence faced by journalists.
The Guild called on the government to take decisive steps to promote press freedom and uphold high journalistic standards by repealing any laws that restrict media operations in the country.
The Editors further acknowledged the dedication and bravery of journalists across Nigeria who risk their lives to provide accurate and reliable information. They reaffirmed their commitment to advocating for press freedom, freedom of expression, and access to information to promote good governance, democratic societies, and human rights.
“We celebrate the courageousness and commitment of journalists across the country, who continue to risk everything to bring us the truth and reliable/credible information. We also acknowledge the growing threats to press freedom – from violence and censorship to disinformation and economic pressures.
“We pay tribute to the journalists who have lost their lives or faced persecution, and we stand in solidarity with those under threat or attack and those who continue to work under very harsh economic conditions,” the statement partly read.
News Central reports that World Press Freedom Day 2024 is focused on the significance of journalism and the freedom to express oneself within the framework of the ongoing global environmental crisis.
