Former Edo State Governor, Adams Oshiomhole, has made a strong call for the appointment of more women in government, a key focus of his advocacy.
Speaking shortly after casting his vote at Iyamoh, Ward 10 Unit 01, in Etsako West Local Government Area of Edo State, Oshiomhole said that the 70% of women seen at the polling unit should reflect the number of appointments given to women in the state.
He said, “This is extremely humbling. Although if you monitor our campaign, everywhere I go we say, ‘No woman, No nation’.
“You can see that for every one man, you can see about four or five women. It shows that the women are more excited to vote.”
“You see when men take over the government the women begin to ask for 30%. Meanwhile, when voting, by my estimate here, women account for 70% of the voters.
“My prayer is that as we improve on girl child education, up to university level or HND level and we have women who have all the skill required, that any politician who wants to survive or win the election must necessarily, not out of favour nor pity, in the self-interest of political activists, they would have to reflect these numbers 50-50, at least.
He also expressed satisfaction with the way the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) handled the election.
He said, “I am extremely happy with what I’ve seen. I was told they started on time in other parts and many people have voted.”
